< All Topics

Introduction

NE5532 Dual Op-Amp Stereo Preamp ModuleThe NE5532 Dual Op-Amp Stereo Preamp Module is designed for high-quality audio preamplification in DIY projects. Built around the NE5532 low-noise operational amplifier, this module provides clean and transparent gain suitable for microphone preamplification, line-level buffering, and audio signal conditioning. Its true dual-channel architecture ensures superior channel separation and minimal crosstalk, making it ideal for critical listening and professional audio applications.

Features

  • True Stereo Architecture:
    • Dedicated NE5532 op-amp per channel (not shared between L/R).
    • Superior channel separation and lower crosstalk compared to single-chip dual-channel designs.
    • Ideal for critical listening applications and professional audio paths.
  • Flexible Power Supply Options:
    • AC Input: 5-16V AC (onboard rectification and filtering).
    • DC Input: 6-24V DC single supply.
    • Integrated single-to-dual rail converter provides virtual ground for bipolar operation.
    • Large-capacity filter capacitors for clean and stable power delivery.
  • User-Adjustable Gain:
    • Default gain: ~5x (14 dB) as shipped.
    • Gain range: Adjustable from 5x to 20x+ by changing R1/R5 feedback resistors.
    • Resistor range: 5kΩ – 100kΩ (higher resistance = higher gain).
    • Easy modification: Desolder SMD resistors and install through-hole components for experimentation.
  • Compact PCB Design:
    • Dimensions: 50mm × 50mm (1.97″ × 1.97″).
    • Height: ~23mm with components.
    • Mounting holes for secure installation in enclosures.
    • Professional red solder mask with clear silkscreen labeling.

Electrical Connections

  • Power Input: Connect your AC or DC power supply to the blue screw terminals.
    • AC Input: 5-16V AC.
    • DC Input: 6-24V DC.
  • Audio Input: Connect your audio source to the “IN L” (Left) and “IN R” (Right) XH2.54 headers.
  • Audio Output: Connect the preamp output to your amplifier or recording device using the “OUT L” (Left) and “OUT R” (Right) XH2.54 headers.

Gain Adjustment

The module’s gain can be adjusted by changing the feedback resistors R1 and R5. The default gain is approximately 5x (14 dB). To increase the gain:

  1. Locate resistors R1 and R5 on the PCB.
  2. Desolder the existing SMD resistors using hot air or solder wick.
  3. Install through-hole resistors across the same pads.
  4. Use resistors in the range of 5kΩ to 100kΩ. Higher resistance values result in higher gain.

The gain (Av) can be approximated using the formula: Av ≈ 1 + (Rf/Rg), where Rf = R1 or R5.

Usage Examples

  • DIY Microphone Preamps: Boost dynamic and condenser microphone signals. Note: External 48V power supply is required for condenser microphones.
  • Instrument Buffers: High-impedance guitar/bass input stages.
  • Line-Level Gain Stages: Add clean gain to mixer channels or effects loops.
  • Vintage Gear Restoration: Drop-in replacement for aging preamp circuits.
  • Audio Prototyping: Breadboard-friendly design for circuit experimentation.
  • Home Recording Studios: Cost-effective way to expand your preamp collection.

Important Notes

  • This is a preamp module, not a power amplifier. It provides voltage gain, not current drive for speakers.
  • External power supply is required (AC transformer or DC wall adapter).
  • Input/output connections are made via screw terminals for power and pin headers for audio signals.
  • No phantom power generation (for condenser mics, add external 48V supply).

Modification Notes for Advanced Users

  • Gain calculation: Av ≈ 1 + (Rf/Rg), where Rf = R1 or R5
  • Resistor swap: Remove SMD resistors with hot air or solder wick; install through-hole resistors across the same pads
  • Recommended resistor types: Metal film (1% tolerance) for best noise performance
  • Power supply filtering: Onboard rectifier + large electrolytics handle ripple; add external regulation for ultra-low-noise applications.
